Mike has a record of getting things done across Hull and East Yorkshire.
He was instrumental in landing the devolution deal – giving us a real chance of electing England’s first Lib Dem metro mayor. As leader of Hull City Council Mike has a proven record of delivering major improvements to our region.
As a Councillor
- Leader of Hull City Council (2022 to present)
- Previous Portfolio Holder for Education, Highways and Community Safety
- Led on ‘Building Schools for the Future’; renewing Hull’s full secondary school estate
- Former Chair of Finance Scrutiny on Hull City Council
- Former member of Humber Police Authority and Fire Authority
- Worked with the Institute of Directors, Hull Chamber of Commerce and Federation of Small Business to raise the profile of the sub-region nationally.
- Set up the Crime Prevention Fund in Hull – allocating hundreds of thousands to extra crime prevention measures in the city.
- Councillor for since 2002 – winning 8 successive elections
In the Community
- School governor for Newland School and Lambert Nursery
- Flood resilience work in schools including giving Ed Balls a tour of the damage following the flood. Worked to raise the profile of Hull and East Riding with regards to the measures needed to improve flood resilience in the future.
- Helped save St Nicholas Primary School from closure
- Chair of the Laburnum Trust which gives out small grants from a bequest from Lord Wilson, Liberal MP and Peer.
Working with Business
- Member of Humber Leaders Board – with other leaders of local authorities tackling joint strategic issues such as economic development, Freeport, transport
- Member of Humber Future which provides business networking, promotion and place promotion for regional investment.
- Set up a key business stakeholders group in the region
- A former member of the Humber LEP, a precursor to the current devolution deal.
- Worked with business and government to deliver Hull and East Yorkshire’s devolution deal.
